  1. General

What is a Virtual Race?

A virtual race, sometimes referred to as a virtual run, is an event that people can run anywhere and at any time. You can walk, jog, or run. You can hit the streets, sidewalks, a trail, or even use a readmill! Feel free to participate in a way that works best for you. The main goal is to get people active and healthy!

What Exactly is Carrera de los Muertos?

Carrera de los Muertos (Spanish for Race of the Dead) is a race event that originated in Chicago, Illinois! The first race took place in 2007, and it has since grown to become one of the premiere race events in the United States of America! Hosted by United Neighborhood Organization (UNO), Carrera de los Muertos takes place every autumn in Chicago’s historic Pilsen neighborhood. In honor of the pre-Hispanic tradition, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), thousands of runners from all over the world come together with their friends and family to celebrate life. Complete with music, costumes, and food, Carrera de los Muertos encourages community participation while promoting health and wellness.

2. Registration and Participation

Can Anyone Participate?

Yes! The race is open to participants of all ages, ability levels, and backgrounds.

Do I Have to Register Online?

Yes, we require all participants to register online. A friend or family member can register for you if you need assistance.

What is Required to Register?

You will need an email address and a credit card to use for payment. You do not need to provide a Drivers License or Identification number, and you do not need a photo ID.

Does Every Participant Need to Provide an Email Address?

Every person 18+ years of age and up is required to provide his/her individual email address because we need you to sign a waiver form. Minors under 18yo need an adult to register for them and sign a waiver form on their behalf.

Does Every Participant Need to Register?

Yes, if you want to receive a goodie bag, upload photos to the race gallery, and receive communications from event officials. Non-registrants are welcome to participate in Carrera de los Muertos but will not be eligible for any of the above including a digital bib.Please note: Due to high shipping costs and delivery uncertainties, we will not be shipping goodie bags to international participants and U.S. participants residing outside of the lower 48 states.

What Do I Get by Registering?

U.S. participants (excluding HI, AK, PR, VI and other U.S. islands) will receive a goodie bag with specially designed items including a shirt, medal, face mask, digital bib.

Is There a Deadline to Register for the Race?

Yes, the last day to register for the race will be October 31st. Please note that Tuesday, October 20th is the cut-off registration date in order to receive your packet by October 31st. Anyone who registers after October 20th will receive their items in early November.  

Can I Walk the Race?

Yes! You may walk, jog, run, hop, or skip.

Do I Actually Have to Run it? Or Can I Bike/Skate/Swim/Row/Ski, etc.?

Traditionally, Carrera de los Muertos is a Run/Walk event. However, this is a virtual race so you are 100% free to participate any way you like. We just want you to have fun!

Do I Have to Complete the Entire Distance All at Once?

Not necessarily. We expect most participants will, however, we understand not everyone is able to complete the distance all at once. The important thing is to set your personal goal and go for it!

How Do I Register Multiple People?

Register a person and add him/her to your cart, then return to the registration page and add another person and so on. Then proceed to the checkout screen and pay for all registrations at once. It must be done this way so that we get every individual’s shirt size and contact information.

I Registered, but Now I Won’t Be Able to Participate. Can I Still Get My Shirt and Other Goodie Bag Items?

Yes. If you paid the race registration fee, we will still mail your items to you (providing you don’t live outside the lower 48 U.S. states).

I Won’t Be Able to Participate. Can I Transfer My Registration to Another Person or Move It to Next Year?

No. We are sorry but no transfers of registration will be allowed.

3. Waivers

Am I Required to Sign a Waiver Form?

Yes. All participants are required to sign and submit the Agreement and Liability Waiver including walkers, joggers, runners, skippers, bikers, wheelchair participants, and anyone else who directly or indirectly steps foot on ground. The ONLY exception is babies and toddlers in carriers and strollers; only the child’s adult guardian needs to sign a waiver form. Anyone who does not sign the waiver form will not be recognized as a race participant, and thus, will not be registered and receive a goodie bag.

4. Timing

How Do I Time My Run and Track My Distance?

The most accurate way to do this is by using a Running GPS watch, but there are also various free smartphone apps available for iPhones and Android devices including:

  • Strava        
  • FitBit        
  • Garmin Connect       
  • Nike Run Club

5. Results and Awards

How are Race Times Verified?

Results are based on the honor system.

Where Do I Upload My Results?

We will not be collecting race times for this year’s virtual race.

Do I Have to Upload My Results in Order to Receive My Medal?

No, everyone is a winner! A medal is included in every goodie bag.

How are Race Times Verified?

Will You Be Giving Out the Traditional Calavera Awards This Year?

No. Due to shipping costs, only medals will be awarded for this virtual race. However, follow us on Facebook and Instagram for possible raffles, which may include Calaveras /skulls decorated by local artists.

When Will I Receive My Medal?

Goodie bags, which include a medal, will be mailed at various times leading up to the race.

What Is The Medal Like ?

What If My Medal Arrives Broken?

If your medal does not arrive safe and sound, please take a picture of it within 72 hours of arrival and email a copy to Carrera@unochicago.org, and we will work with you to replace it.


What is a Tech Shirt?

A shirt with moisture-wicking fabric (AKA a dri-fit shirt).

Is the Design the Same on Both the Cotton and Tech Shirts?

Yes, the design and colors are the same. The only difference is the material.

What Does the Shirt Look Like?

When Will I Receive It?

Shirts are included in the goodie bags, which are mailed out at various times leading up to the race.

Please note: Due to the time it takes to process shirt orders and ship items, we cannot guarantee you will receive your goodie bag by Race Day if you register after September 16th.


What is a Digital Race Bib?

It is an image of a race bib that gets created once you register. It will be emailed to you, and you can download and print it.

Can I Get a Real Race Bib Instead of a Digital Bib?

Yes, you can purchase a real race bib for $4 extra. There is no additional charge to personalize it. However, we cannot guarantee delivery of your personalized real race bib by Race Day if you request a personalization after September 16th.

Can I Personalize My Bib?

Yes! Both the digital and real race bibs can be personalized. Be creative, have fun with it!Please note: We cannot guarantee delivery of a personalized real race bib by Race Day if you order it after September 16th.


When Can I Expect My Stuff?

Goodie bags will be mailed at various times leading up to the race. Your digital bib is created immediately upon registration and will be emailed to you afterwards.Please note: We cannot guarantee delivery of your goodie bag by Race Day if you register after September 16th.

Does Shipping Cost Extra?

No, shipping and handling cost is included in the registration fee.

Do You Ship Internationally?

No. Unfortunately, due to high shipping costs and delivery uncertainties, we only ship to U.S. race participants residing within the lower 48 states. Race participants that live outside the lower 48 states will not get a goodie bag.

Do You Offer Expedited Shipping?

No. We apologize, but we do not have the capacity to process expedited orders.

9. Discounts

Do You Offer Group Discounts?

We may occasionally offer group discounts. If you’re a member of a running club, school, large corporation or organization that is interested in a group discount, please email Carrera@unochicago.org for more information

10. Costumes

Do Race Participants Wear Costumes?

Yes! Many people do! Part of what makes the Day of the Dead holiday so fun are the costumes and makeup.

11. Charity

Where Do Race Proceeds Go?

100% of the proceeds go to United Neighborhood Organization (UNO), a registered 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation based in Chicago, IL. Some of the proceeds get specifically allocated to Girls Mpowered, an afterschool program for at-risk teens.

Is My Registration Fee Tax Deductible?

No. Only contributions to UNO in the amount of $250 or more are tax deductible. If you have questions about financial contributions, please email anna@unochicago.org

Can I Get a Refund?

Unfortunately, we are not able to offer refunds for Carrera de los Muertos.
